The Central Philippine Union Conference (CPUC) proudly participated in the first-ever Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD) Wide Teacher’s Convention, held from May 25 to 28, 2025, at the Ambassador City, Jomtien, Pattaya, Thailand.

Themed “Called to Be Faithful Educators,” this landmark gathering brought together over 1,800 Adventist educators from across the Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD) for a time of spiritual renewal, professional growth, and mission-focused fellowship.

Leading the largest delegation at the convention was the CPUC group of teachers headed by Lemuel Banday, the education director for the CPUC.

Spearheaded by Pastor Bienvenido G. Mergal, the SSD education director, the convention was made possible through the strong support from Dr. Lisa M. Beardsley-Hardy, the director of education for the General Conference, and Pastor Roger O. Caderma, the SSD president.

The event aimed to reinvigorate the sacred calling of Adventist teachers as both educators and disciple-makers.

Over the four-day event, delegates participated in worship services, keynote sessions, and practical workshops designed to strengthen their roles in Adventist education. Church leaders and education experts shared inspiring messages, emphasizing the spiritual mission embedded within the teaching profession.

In an address at the Ambassador City Hotel, Mergal reminded delegates of their divine calling: “It is important for all of us to take heed of what the Scriptures say—that we are all called for a mission of reconciliation as ambassadors for Christ.”

He further emphasized the convention’s goal of reigniting teachers’ awareness of their role in shaping students not just academically, but spiritually. “Our schools must serve as training grounds where young people are inspired to grasp the greatness of the work entrusted to them,” he added.

On the other hand, Caderma emphasized the significance of the Christian education in his message in relation to soul-winning. “The work of education and the work of redemption are one.”

Therefore, teachers are called to be faithful in their sacred mission of educating students, as they are agents of God in their salvation.

The CPUC delegation made a memorable impression during the cultural presentation, captivating the audience with a vibrant showcase of Filipino bravery, creativity, and resilience. The performance received enthusiastic applause as it portrayed the strength and spirit of the Filipino people through various forms of art and talent.

In one of the program’s highlights, teachers were recognized for their years of dedicated service to the denomination through the awarding of service pins. Each pin symbolized a milestone, beginning from five years of service and ascending to the highest number of years of loyalty and commitment.

The event reached an emotional peak when the highest honors were awarded to long-serving educators. A resounding round of applause filled the room Banday was honored for an extraordinary 40 years of faithful service.

He was followed closely by Fe Pigon, women’s ministries director of the CPUC, who received recognition for her 39 years of committed service. Following these two was Visminda Guisando, who was acknowledged for her 35 years of service.

These dedicated educators have devoted much of their lives to the mission of the school, embodying values of perseverance, integrity, and unwavering commitment. As they approach retirement, their contributions continue to inspire both colleagues and students alike. Their legacy is a testament to what it means to serve with both heart and purpose.

The convention concluded with an educational tour of Thailand’s most picturesque tourist destinations. This scenic experience offered teachers a chance to relax and reflect, allowing them to take home not only beautiful memories but also a renewed sense of purpose and mission.

As delegates returned to their respective schools, they carried with them inspiration and conviction to continue molding the hearts and minds of students—with faith, excellence, and a steadfast commitment to God’s calling as His mission.

Pastor Jacint Adap, the SSD treasurer, highlighted in his message the unique role of Adventist schools in mission work: “In many places, our schools are the first—and sometimes the only—connection families have with the Adventist Church. They are not just supporting the mission; they are the mission.”
