Churches from Unit 2 of the Northern Bohol District wrapped up a four-month jail ministry at the Trinidad Municipal Jail on Nov. 24, 2024.
The event marked a spiritual milestone as eight 'Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL)' expressed the decision to accept Jesus as their Savior, a commitment assessed by the district leader, Pastor Armando F. Andrade.
However, the baptism ceremony, conducted by Pastor Gregorio Aurestila, Southeast Bohol District pastor, was scheduled for Dec. 1, a week later, inside the police station.
Unfortunately, only five of the eight PDLs could join the baptism due to unforeseen circumstances. Two were transferred to Talibon Jail, another municipality in Bohol, the day after the culmination program, and one was released and needed to reunite with his family.
PDLs tearfully shared their gratitude, expressing how the ministry brought hope and spiritual guidance into their lives. "I felt lost because of my situation, but through your presence and Bible studies, I feel guided," one inmate shared during the event.
Police officers also reflected on the ministry's impact. Police Sergeant Liezel Puracan Impis expressed gratitude on behalf of the force, saying, "We are grateful for your efforts in jail ministry. Had it not been for my duty, I would have listened to the Bible study myself. It is enlightening. We've noticed a transformation in the inmates—they are kind and cooperative. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you."
Chief of Police PCPT Waldo Suraliza Batad echoed the sentiment, commending the Adventist churches for their dedication and granting continued permission for the ministry.
Sister Benedicta Orevillo, a member of the Tagum Norte Church, spearheaded the initiative. Recalling her inspiration, she shared, "While I was in town, the Holy Spirit impressed upon me the need to give Bible studies to the inmates at Trinidad Jail. I approached the chief of police, and by God's grace, he was open and supportive. We were able to organize weekly sessions immediately."
Churches under Northern Bohol District Unit 2 immediately embraced Orevillo's desire for the jail ministry and the opportunity presented by the chief of police. Since then, these brethren from NBD Unit 2 conducted Bible studies every Sabbath afternoon.
This jail ministry was a collaborative effort among eight churches of the Northern Bohol District. They were Tagum Norte, La Union 1, La Union 2, Cambangay, Cabiguhan, Mahayag, Badiang, and Bien Unido.
Brother Enrique O. Orevillo, the Unit 2 layman, led the Bible study series, following a devotional format to deeply engage these precious persons behind bars.
