CPAC Nursing Student Council Hosts Health Awareness Event for World Diabetes Day

News November 20, 2024

Central Philippine Adventist College, through the Nursing Student Council and the college clinic, organized a health awareness event on Nov. 14, 2024, in observance of World Diabetes Day.

The event took place in the hallway between the President’s Office and the Boardroom, attracting the attention of both students and faculty.

World Diabetes Day is an annual event that raises awareness about the growing diabetes epidemic, its complications, and the importance of prevention. It advocates for accessible care and support for those affected while uniting the global community in the fight against diabetes.

In the Philippines, approximately 4.7 million individuals are currently living with the condition, many facing severe complications that can lead to disability or premature death. Ultimately, the global event encourages individuals to take control of their health and promotes research for better treatment and a potential cure.

It was first established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).  It became an official United Nations Day in 2006.   The date, November 14th, was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.

The nursing department aimed to raise awareness and promote proactive diabetes management within the college community. The day featured several informative activities, including random and fasting blood sugar testing, which were conducted to give participants real-time insight into their health status.

Forty-six students and 35 faculty and staff participated in the health screenings. In addition to testing, the nursing students presented educational information through informative displays detailing the types of diabetes, effective management strategies, and healthy lifestyle practices.

The aim was to enlighten attendees about the importance of early detection and ongoing diabetes management, encouraging proactive steps to prevent and control the disease.

The successful turnout and engagement at the event reflect the growing interest in health education and the commitment of the college community to tackle critical health issues.

The student nurses and the college clinic expressed gratitude to all participants for prioritizing their health and well-being.

CPAC, driven by a deep understanding of the interconnection between physical well-being and spiritual devotion, continues to advocate for health awareness. They recognize that God’s creation encompasses not only the soul but also the body and that honoring Him entails cherishing and caring for both.

By promoting healthy lifestyles, CPAC empowers individuals to reflect the divine image in which they are created.
